When a sofa won't fit in a Brooklyn building
We've fitted sofas all over Brooklyn, and the building decides how the job goes.
- Brownstones and row houses in Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Fort Greene. A stoop up to the parlor floor, then stairs that turn at each landing. Taken apart, the sofa goes up in pieces and is rebuilt in the room.
- Walk-ups in Greenpoint, Bed-Stuy and Bay Ridge. Stairs are free up to three flights, then +$25 for each flight after that.
- Newer elevator buildings in DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn and on the Williamsburg waterfront. Many ask for a booked service elevator and an insurance certificate. We speak with the super or building management, and we send the certificate on request.

Typical Brooklyn jobs
Two kinds of job we do all the time. The photos show our work from across the city.
A Bay Ridge walk-up. A sectional that won't make the turn at the landing. With the On-the-Spot Fit, we take the pieces apart in the hallway, carry them up and rebuild the sectional in the living room.
A Park Slope brownstone. A new sofa too deep for the stoop and the parlor-floor door. With the Workshop Fit, the store sends it to our workshop and we take it apart indoors on a clean carpet. It arrives wrapped, goes up the stoop in pieces and is rebuilt in the parlor.
How the sofa comes apart and goes back together
We lift the back upholstery panel and look at the frame to see where to cut. To get the back off, we usually cut the wood frame. We rebuild the joint with plates screwed across it, so it is stronger than before, then re-upholster it as it was. With the back off, what's left is a U: both arms and the seat, and that fits through almost any NYC door. For a tighter entrance, we take out an L: the back plus one arm.
Two ways to get it done

What it costs
- Most sofas, where the back upholstery is its own panel: from $275.
- Sleepers: about $300–$350. Recliners: about $350. They take more work because they are heavy.
- Back and arms in one continuous piece of upholstery: $400–$450.
- Each extra sectional piece taken apart: +$175.
- Stairs: no charge up to three flights, then +$25 per flight. Same day when you book before 7 PM, at no extra charge; otherwise, the earliest open slot.
- Brooklyn: no toll is added.
