When a sofa won't fit in a Staten Island home
We've fitted sofas across Staten Island, at the same prices as the rest of the city plus the bridge toll.
- Houses on Todt Hill, Grymes Hill and Emerson Hill, and along the South Shore in Great Kills, Annadale and Tottenville. Stairs to the upper floor are often narrow and turn at a landing. Taken apart, the sofa goes up in pieces and is rebuilt in the room. Stairs are free up to three flights, then +$25 for each flight after that.
- Basements. Basement stairs are often the tightest in the house. We take the sofa apart at the top, carry the pieces down and rebuild it below.
- Condos and elevator buildings near St. George and Stapleton. Many ask for an insurance certificate. We're fully insured, and we send the certificate on request.

Typical Staten Island jobs
Two kinds of job we do all the time. The photos show our work from across the city.
A house in Great Kills. A heavy sleeper and narrow stairs to the bedroom. With the On-the-Spot Fit, we take the sleeper apart at the door, carry the pieces up and rebuild it upstairs.
A house on Todt Hill. A new sectional sent to our workshop first. With the Workshop Fit, we take it apart indoors on a clean carpet, bring it over the bridge wrapped, carry it in and rebuild it in the living room.
How the sofa comes apart and goes back together
We lift the back upholstery panel and look at the frame to see where to cut. To get the back off, we usually cut the wood frame. We rebuild the joint with plates screwed across it, so it is stronger than before, then re-upholster it as it was. With the back off, what's left is a U: both arms and the seat, and that fits through almost any NYC door. For a tighter entrance, we take out an L: the back plus one arm.
Two ways to get it done

What it costs
- Most sofas, where the back upholstery is its own panel: from $275.
- Sleepers: about $300–$350. Recliners: about $350. They take more work because they are heavy.
- Back and arms in one continuous piece of upholstery: $400–$450.
- Each extra sectional piece taken apart: +$175.
- Stairs: no charge up to three flights, then +$25 per flight. Same day when you book before 7 PM, at no extra charge; otherwise, the earliest open slot.
- Staten Island: the $45 round-trip bridge toll, added once.
