Two Manhattan jobs
An Interior Define sleeper on the Upper West Side. The elevator couldn't take the sofa's length, and the turn at the apartment door was too tight for it whole. It came to our workshop first and was taken apart indoors. Then it went up the stairs, wrapped, and was put back together in the apartment.
An RH Cloud up four flights of stairs. The Cloud's back and arms are one continuous piece of upholstery, so more of it has to come off. We took it apart on the spot, carried it up and put it back together inside.
Manhattan buildings
- Doorman and service-elevator buildings. We speak with the super or doorman, and we send the insurance certificate on request.
- Walk-ups. Stairs are free up to three flights, then +$25 for each flight after that.
- Small elevators. Taken apart, the pieces fit a smaller cab. When the elevator can't take a sofa's length at all, the pieces go up the stairs.
How the sofa comes apart
New Yorkers call this work sofa surgery, and the people who do it couch doctors.
We lift the back upholstery panel and look at the frame to see where to cut. To get the back off, we usually cut the wood frame. We put the joint back together with wood, steel plates or both, screwed across the cut, so it holds as strong as before, or stronger. Then we reattach the upholstery the way it was. With the back off, what's left is a U: both arms and the seat, and that fits through almost any NYC door. For a tighter entrance, we take out an L: the back plus one arm.
Two ways to get it done
