The Craft
Most sofas don't come apart at factory joints. To get the back off, we usually cut the wood frame — then rebuild it so it holds.
We lift the back upholstery panel and look at the frame to see where to cut.
What's left is a U — both arms and the seat — and that fits through almost any NYC door. For a tighter entrance, we take out an L: the back plus one arm.
Inside your home, we screw wood pieces or metal plates across the cut. Most frames are held together with glue, so the rebuilt joint is sturdier than it was.
The upholstery goes back the way it was, and the sofa is placed where you want it.
What makes a sofa harder is the upholstery, not the price tag. When the back and arms are one continuous piece, more of it has to come off. Sleepers and recliners take more work because they are heavy.
